A mere formality for the Ukrainian woman?
While Shuai Zhang has often struggled on traditional red clay, the green clay in South Carolina seems to be a more welcoming surface for her. Last year, she made it to the round of 32 (2nd round), showing great fighting spirit and proving that the relative speed of Har-Tru can compensate for her defensive shortcomings on red clay. However, at 37, Shuai comes into 2026 with a fragile singles record. Even if her doubles success (notably her Australian Open title this year) keeps her competitive rhythm sharp, her ability to withstand high-intensity rallies against a player who never lets go remains the biggest question mark in this matchup. Asia is still, overall, a hard-court school (Yes, I know the Olympic champion is Chinese and has a clay title :))
Across the net, Yuliia Starodubtseva is in full breakout mode. Currently ranked 88th in the live rankings, she’s riding the wave of confidence from her third-round run in Miami last week. Starodubtseva is a player with a hybrid kind of tennis: exceptional court coverage, endless patience, and already well-honed sliding skills. She didn’t have to go through qualifying here and arrives with total physical freshness. Her goal will be clear: extend the rallies to test Zhang’s physical limits and push her into unforced errors, a strategy that has often paid off against the Chinese player in recent months. A tennis “Qi” that is much sharper and more aggressive despite the Chinese veteran’s experience.
The match-up rests on a paradox: Zhang has the experience and good recent memories in Charleston (her round of 16 in 2025), but Starodubtseva has the legs and the momentum. On this surface, where you have to be willing to play one shot more than you’d like, the advantage naturally goes to the Ukrainian. Zhang will have to take maximum risks to shorten the points, but against a defense as solid as Yuliia’s right now, the margin for error will be tiny. Current form and her rise in the live rankings tip the scales toward the younger player.
