Clash of styles!
Anastasiya Tikhonova is a rising player who relies on an impressive natural ball-striking ability. While she long favored fast surfaces, the 25-year-old Russian has proven she knows how to adapt her heavy ball to clay, especially at altitude (doubles title in Quito in 2025). On the other side of the net, Despina Papamichail is the archetypal clay-court player: tireless endurance, great court positioning, and a rare ability to wear down her opponents physically. The 33-year-old Greek compensates for a lack of pure power with game intelligence and consistency that make her a real menace on this surface, in theory. Despina is a marathoner who plays a huge number of tournaments all year long, and that heavy schedule often works against her.
The match-up promises to be particularly intense because both players come in with opposing strengths. Anastasiya Tikhonova is already perfectly dialed in: she has two qualifying matches in her legs, including a statement win yesterday against Marina Bassols Ribera, where she showed she could handle a 2.5-hour battle at 2,600 meters of altitude. This mentally tough victory proves she has found her timing with Bogota’s light ball. Across the net, Despina Papamichail will try to impose a total physical challenge by extending rallies to test the Russian’s recovery after her marathon.
Tikhonova delivered a blistering first set against Bassols before fading a bit, then finding the resources to grab a crucial break at the perfect moment in the third. This ability to dictate play under pressure will be the key against a Papamichail who still has no real match rhythm in official competition this week. If the Russian manages to hit through the Greek’s defense with the same precision she showed in qualifying, she could very well pull off the upset despite her ranking.
