The returning woman and the qualified woman

Two players on opposite trajectories meet on Cancha 3 in Bogota this Tuesday. Lia Karatančeva, 22, arrives in the main draw brimming with confidence after coming through qualifying without dropping a set — 6-1 6-4 against Zhao, 6-1 6-2 against Tona. The Bulgarian is winning 61% of the points played in this tournament and shows remarkable solidity on serve, with an almost non-existent double-fault rate. Her clay-court tennis, built on depth of shot and the ability to force opponents to hit one ball too many, adapts perfectly to Bogota’s altitude, where spin and bounce are amplified. Across the net, Varvara Lepchenko, 39 and a former top-20 player, is an experienced left-hander with a very strong career record on clay. But the American comes here for her very first match on clay in the 2026 season, after a clear 3-6 2-6 loss in Miami qualifying to Frühvirtová. Getting her eye in is going to take some time.

The only head-to-head between the two players, played in 2024 on clay in Naples at a W35, ended in a resounding 6-0 6-3 win for Lepchenko. But two years of physical and tactical development for a 22-year-old is an eternity — and their current form tells a very different story.
