A great warm-up on clay for Timofeeva!

Two Russians, two right-handers, almost side by side in the rankings. Timofeeva and Charaeva face off in qualifying for the first European-clay WTA 500 of the season, on the indoor clay at the Design Center Linz.

Maria Timofeeva, 22 years old, Uzbekistan, WTA 153, coached by Suwanprateep and Waske since Koper. Her 2026 record is five wins and five losses on hard, but clay is her playground — Budapest 2023 as a lucky loser remains her most notable achievement on this surface. What else do we know: she did five days of intensive clay prep before the tournament and wrapped it up this morning with a session with Sinja Kraus right in Linz. So she’s coming in well-tuned, with her legs on the surface, not at all in the fog her hard-court record might have suggested. Her only meeting with Charaeva on clay? A 6–3 6–4 win in Changsha in September 2025.

Alina Charaeva, 23 years old, Russia, WTA 129. She’s also arriving in good clay form with two consecutive quarterfinals in Antalya and Dubrovnik as preparation, each time knocked out by the eventual champion. A flat hitter who likes to take the ball early — a profile that can struggle against someone who extends rallies and constructs points on clay.
