Draper is unlucky with this draw for his first clay match of the year

The Brit is still managing his injuries smartly; he chose not to play Monte Carlo and, just like Fils, I think that’s a good choice. But unlike the Frenchman, he’ll have to show that he’s capable of playing well on clay; we don’t really have any certainty about his ability to play at the same level on clay as on hard. He’s already had some great results but with a game style that’s very much his own, without really adapting, and he still has a margin over most of the tour even on clay. A majority that Etcheverry is not part of in my opinion: the Argentine is a nightmare to face, his steely mindset is a real weapon. He actually wins a ton of matches, already 17 wins this year and only two first-round losses in a tournament (and both times he lost 7–6 in the third). He’s a very consistent player in terms of results, but especially on court where he keeps a high level throughout his matches, with no physical/mental drop either. A real top clay-courter who will be extremely hard to beat again this week; his record here is really good with a semi in 2024, and otherwise he only loses to Foki or ADM, not just anyone.

Draper knows what to expect and this time I’m not super optimistic; on clay I’ve never really liked him, but he’s still young and will improve on it. For his comeback this season, I’m left with a slight feeling of unfinished business as well; he played some good matches but it’s not prime Draper like we quickly got during his previous returns, he still has to convince me personally. And even more so on slow clay, so for his first match of the year on it, there’s a big trap waiting for him and I’m not convinced he’ll get through it...
