We last saw Tabilo in a three-set loss to Jiri Lehecka in Monte Carlo. The Chilean actually played well and almost won, taking Jiri to a tiebreak in the second set. His clutch side could very well have made the difference, but Jiri was mentally strong, to be fair, and finished much stronger physically. That’s a factor to keep in mind if the match ends up being long. But maybe it’s the Brazilian who’ll be a bit tired, given his 4 matches in Monte Carlo, the last one against Zverev just 4 days ago…

Their two previous meetings were already on clay and were decided by a hair’s breadth, but Joao wasn’t in his current form back then. He’s just played Sinner, Alcaraz, and Zverev in three Masters 1000 tournaments in a row. His maximum level has gone up.

In terms of match‑up, I feel like Tabilo has a game that can bother him by breaking up his usual patterns with his lefty touch, the quality of his serve, and his cunning. But right now, Fonseca’s baseline game on clay is just too solid. He can keep Tabilo out of range quite often in rallies thanks to his power and his now reliable consistency. Not to mention his fairly recent ability to come forward and finish intelligently at the net.
