Back after injury!

Rouen opens its fifth edition at the Kindarena on indoor clay, WTA 250, with controlled conditions. The surface is faster than classic outdoor clay, with a low bounce, an environment that favors flat hitters and players with an effective serve, while still rewarding returners who are able to build on their opponents’ second serves.

Daria Kasatkina, 28 years old, Australian of Russian origin, right-handed, ranked 70th in the world, coached by Flavio Cipolla. She is coming back after two months out with a right hip injury picked up in Dubai in mid-February, which cost her Indian Wells, Miami, and Charleston. This is her first match in eight weeks and her very first match of the season on clay. A player who hit a mental wall at the end of 2025, who wanted to start 2026 with a smile again, and who chose Rouen on clay as the stage for her comeback, her declared favorite surface since forever. That choice is no accident.

Ann Li, 25 years old, American, right-handed, ranked 39th in the world, coached by Carlos Boluda out of Alicante. Two career titles on hard courts, a strong 2025 season capped by a title in Guangzhou and a run to the round of 16 at the US Open. But her transition to clay in 2026 has been laborious. In Linz, she lost her opener to Yastremska 7–5 4–6 6–3. In Charleston, on a surface comparable to Rouen in terms of speed, she went out with alarming stats: only 57% first serves in, 44% of points won on second serve, 3 break points saved out of 8, 25% of return games won. She even saved 3 match points in that match. Apart from a few aces, she has offered nothing truly convincing on this surface this week.
