A great window of opportunity for Wang

Sorana Cîrstea is playing her final season on tour. Twenty years of career, four WTA titles, a consistency in the top 100 that commands respect. The Romanian arrives in Rouen in excellent overall form, 20–6 in 2026, with a title in Cluj in February where she crushed Raducanu 6–0 6–2 in the final. But yesterday against Ferro, ranked 221st in the world, it took three sets and two tiebreaks to get through. A 35-year-old player at the end of the season, however determined she may be, doesn’t recover the same way as at 25. And that’s exactly what the market hasn’t priced in.

Wang Xinyu has nine sets in her legs since the qualifiers, three matches including two comebacks after disastrous first sets. On clay, her stats don’t work in her favor: a 41% win rate in her WTA career on this surface, and the higher bounce at the Kindarena cancels out her natural advantage of flat hitting. But she’s 24, she comes in with the confidence of having beaten Paquet yesterday, and the two players have never faced each other on the main tour, so there is no established psychological pattern between them.
