Conditions for Comesana?

The Argentine is defending a third round this week; last year he beat Martinez then Fils, not bad at all.

Except this year Comesana is just a shadow of himself, he’s coming in low on confidence and he’s not showing any signs of gaining momentum. I thought things were getting better in Monte Carlo where he won two matches and put up a good fight against Cobolli, but then he regressed at a Challenger afterwards against Silva. Still a big consistency problem in his matches, his backhand is also really weak and he can’t find a way out so he plays quite a lot of slices. Last year he was strong at serving/doing damage with his forehand, but even those attacking patterns feel like they’re a bit less present. Maybe he can find a good vibe again this week, but that’s pretty much the only thing that could help him.

On top of that, bad draw against Machac, the Czech is no longer seeded and was one of the dangerous players to avoid in the first round. He’s just had an excellent tournament in Barcelona and seems to be showing the beginnings of some consistency? You always have to be cautious with him, but it’s been several matches now that he’s showing good things and his body is holding up, so we can reasonably be optimistic for him this week. No breakthrough in Madrid yet, but I think these conditions are really good for him. This match, as often, is going to depend on him. The balls really fly here and with his high-risk game he might have a tricky start, but that’s honestly the only “negative” thing I can find before the match starts because everything points in his direction.
