The Romanian arrives in form, the Croatian arrives on the wrong surface

Elena Gabriela Ruse is a player who has built her entire tennis identity on clay. Five Challenger/ITF titles all on clay, one WTA title on the surface, a 52-week record that shows a player comfortable on the red dirt even when everything isn’t going perfectly. In Linz last week she strung together wins over Boulter, Yastremska, and Ostapenko on indoor clay before losing in the semifinals, a run that confirms she arrives in Madrid with solid clay rhythm and her confidence intact.

Antonia Ruzic is a hard-court player who has built her twelve Challenger/ITF titles mainly on hard. On clay at WTA level she’s 1–2 in her career; it’s by far her weakest surface. The 2–0 H2H in favor of Ruse doesn’t say anything about clay, but it does say that Ruse dominated their two head-to-heads. Tonia is still a very defensive baseliner, but her match against Samsonova in Stuttgart really disappointed me.
