How’s it going, Ugo, in Madrid?
It doesn’t amount to much, guys. I’m counting and I think there are only two wins for the Frenchman in six appearances at the Madrid tournament. The conditions could be favorable, at least on serve, but he’s on a surface that the Frenchman still struggles a bit to master. It’s a clay court that’s a bit more slippery than Monte Carlo, which is the clay tournament where he feels the best, in my opinion. There’s also the altitude, which makes his trajectories, quite straight — not to say skimming — and his attacking game with little margin for error, make a solid match from the Frenchman rather complicated. In terms of form, we last saw him in Monte Carlo, where he suffered a heavy defeat against Jannik Sinner. And I don’t know why he didn’t then play either Munich or Barcelona. He pulled out with a knee injury after playing UTS in the arenas of Nîmes. I think that was a good decision on his part. For a first match here, against an in-form Terrence Atmane, I’m expecting a tough match. I particularly like the fact that Terrence has just lost to Arthur Fils in Barcelona in a hard-fought match, where he missed two match points. That’s an area of growth for him. He often tightens up when he plays against a Frenchman, and that match against Arthur will, I think, serve as a lesson and massively boost his motivation here. I’ll be looking closely at the odds, because for me, Terrence should be the favorite here. Thanks.
