An Austrian surprise here?

Julia Grabher doesn’t look scary on paper. The 29-year-old Austrian, coached by Gunter Bresnik, sits at 121 in the world rankings and comes in with a not-very-convincing 2026 WTA record. But on red clay, she’s a different animal: 17 Challenger and ITF titles on clay in her career, remarkable movement as seen in qualifying yesterday, and clay stats over the last 52 weeks that flatly contradict the underdog status the market is giving her. Her ability to read the game from the back of the court, attack the opponent’s second serve, and turn break chances into decisive moments is real and well-documented on this surface.

On the other side, Dalma Galfi is the logical favorite based on ranking and her recent clay form in Madrid, with three straight wins including over Tomljanovic. The 27-year-old Hungarian holds serve better and saves more break points than the Austrian. But her return numbers on clay over the last 52 weeks are noticeably weaker, and in the very slow Roman conditions where the ball slows down even more after the bounce, Grabher has the tools to cause problems and keep the sets tight.
