Big Foe stronger?
Tiafoe can play at a higher level but we know how these kinds of matches go..
Good first round from Tiafoe against the young local Dedura, the American raised his level when he needed to but it wasn’t exceptional either. He’ll surely grow into the tournament but I’m asking to see more, and starting tomorrow the opposition will be much tougher. Clay-courters aren’t a bad match-up for him because he likes to work from the baseline, it’s mainly big servers/aggressive players that bother him. But watch out for the other extreme: a guy like Carabelli can blow him up from the back of the court and counter him well enough that he can’t find any solutions.
The Argentinian got himself out of a real mess in the first round, he was getting crushed by Majchrzak before turning the match around for good. Once he got into the match he played really well. He’s been a bit hard to read in recent weeks, he can play great matches and then completely disappear; it’s definitely less consistent than Tiafoe this season.
Hard to really trust him, but he’s clearly the underdog here so I’d say the risk is worth taking; in any case, when I see Tiafoe at 1.70, I don’t really feel like the value is on his side.
