Clara, a real slacker?

This first-round match on Court 12 at 2:00 pm in 33°C heat pits a 21st seed with a very disappointing 2026 clay-court record against a Ukrainian outsider built on grit and endurance.

Clara Tauson, coached by Kasper Elsvad and training at the Justine Henin Academy, constantly looks for the short route: powerful serve, quick finishes, minimal movement. On hard courts, that works. On clay in intense heat, it’s a different story. Zero wins on the surface in 2026, two retirements, a straightforward defeat in Strasbourg, and a WTA clay record of 2–4 over the last 52 weeks. It’s not an injury that explains all this; it’s a style of tennis that is structurally ill-suited to what the surface demands. She does, however, have a fourth round here in 2024 and a third round in 2025, and Grand Slam motivation can change the way she approaches the match.

Coached by her father Sergiy, Daria Snigur is playing her very first main draw here after two previous runs in qualifying. Her overall 2026 record stands at 29 wins and 8 losses, built mainly outside main WTA level. On clay this season she beat Kasatkina in three epic sets in Madrid, saving four match points, then lost to Swiatek and Basiletti in qualifying in Rome. She plays long, patient rallies, gets balls back, and forces her opponent to construct points. Her average of just one ace per match says everything about her approach. Against a Tauson who avoids deep rallies, she’s the ideal profile to create chaos.
