The new Austrian pride facing a weakened Briton

Anastasia Potapova, 25 years old, WTA No. 30, has been representing Austria since December 2025 after playing under the Russian flag her whole career. Born in Saratov, she obtained Austrian nationality and was immediately welcomed as a local heroine in Linz in April, becoming the first Austrian player in history to reach a WTA 500 final. There she knocked out Korpatsch, Tagger and Vekić without losing a set before falling to Andreeva in the final. In Rome, she beat Muchova then Samsonova before losing to Pegula in the round of 16. Yesterday on Lenglen, 6–1 6–2 against Joint in 1h09. Her 2026 season is the best clay swing of her career since her title in Istanbul 2022. Coached by Henner Nehles since December 2025, round of 16 here in 2024.

Katie Boulter, 29 years old, WTA No. 61, coached by Michael Joyce since the start of 2026, scraped out her win yesterday 6–4 4–6 6–4 against Urhobo in a match she herself described as a roller coaster. More worrying: she admitted she wasn’t fully there physically, citing a recent illness and a lack of rest. Seven double faults on the stats sheet. She’s been improving on clay for two years but structurally remains more comfortable on grass and hard courts. Reached the second round here for the first time last year.
