A good Gaston-style blunder!
After beating Monfils we’ll finally all be able to root for Gaston!
I think we can say that it was a really good match from Gaston against Monfils. Personally, I wasn’t expecting him to be at that level, I really liked what he showed. Obviously, Monfils was very tired and nowhere near his best, but Gaston was particularly effective in both patterns of play, whether defensively or even offensively. He had a scare because of an illness and not an injury, which is reassuring. I’m wondering if he might be able to do something against Cerundolo.
This time, he’s going to have the support of the crowd, and I like his style of play against Cerundolo, who can have big mental lapses during his matches.
The Argentinian plays very well… right up until he plays very badly. It’s quite pronounced in both directions, and he pulled the same trick again against VDZ in the first round, where he was calmly in front, could have finished the match in 3 sets, and ended up dragged into a fourth-set nightmare, where he had to tighten up his game. These turnarounds are pretty typical for him.
I think you really have to look at it match by match and see which version of Cerundolo we’re getting. Because I think he’s more than capable of dishing out a beating to a guy like Gaston. But I also think he could really take one…
