What if?
Two years ago, Alina Korneeva was going through one of the darkest periods of her young life. She had wrist surgery at the start of 2024, was out for seven months, then suffered another wrist injury in 2025 with another six-month break. She confided to a Polish journalist: "I deleted all the tennis apps, I stopped following the results. Seeing that others could play while I was in my room training one hour a day, it was crushing. There were times when I felt intense anger every day." She said this at 17. Junior Grand Slam doubles champion in 2023, the first to achieve this feat in ten years, she came back on court as if her fate were suspended between two physio sessions. She came back. A WTA 125 title in Oeiras in January 2026, four qualifying rounds at Roland-Garros, and on Monday a 6–3, 6–3 win against Cocciaretto in 1h23 without ever wavering. Roland-Garros’ official account headlined after her qualification: "Accepting not being ready sooner." She plays with the freedom of someone who knows what absence costs.
Anna Kalinskaya, 27 years old, WTA No. 22, coached by Patricia Tarabini for seven years, came and took care of Boisson 6–2, 6–2 in 1h19 on Tuesday with the cold precision of a player who knows what she wants. 18 winners to 10, game plan executed to perfection. Quarterfinalist at the 2024 Australian Open, finalist in Dubai, Berlin and Washington. Her flat, aggressive game works on all surfaces, but clay remains her discomfort zone: 46% career WTA wins on this surface, and on Tuesday it was Boisson who was coming back from nine months without a win. The quality of the victory is real but the opponent was diminished.
The 2026 clay stats reveal a tighter match than expected. Kalinskaya is superior in Match Efficiency at 1.994 versus 1.641 and 100% tiebreaks won versus 66.7% for Korneeva. But Korneeva dominates on return: 44.9% of return games won versus 41.8%, 42.3% of points won on the opponent’s first serve versus 35.5%, and 2.57 pts/game on return versus 2.14 for Kalinskaya. She will constantly create chances. Kalinskaya converts her break points better at 58.9% versus 50%, but Korneeva will force her to defend a lot of them.
