Tennis can move really fast.

Two players who’ve had no confidence at all lately, but who tomorrow will have a huge opportunity to finally kick-start their season.

I saw Matteo Berrettini at his very best again in his win over Rinderknech, both in terms of tennis and mentality. The Italian really played a boss-level match, being ultra dominant on serve and pretty inspired on return, which is often a big indicator of his level. He was also clutch when he needed to be. It was a complete performance from Berrettini and we know how good he is at seizing opportunities and raising his level when it matters. We’re talking about a very open part of the draw, with Sinner’s defeat, and we shouldn’t forget Berrettini’s track record in Grand Slams. Maybe he’ll be the real surprise in this section of the draw.

The other comeback story is Comesana, who’s played a bunch of poor matches this season and hasn’t been able to find his tennis. But I already really liked his first-round match, and he totally confirmed it against Darderi in a high-quality encounter. The Argentine can perform well in these long formats and he has interesting tennis when he’s feeling the ball well. He’s tricky for his opponents and varied. El Tiburón is on fire!

First meeting between these two players and Berrettini is a clear favorite, which I find logical given the Italian’s track record and his top level, but also considering the performances he’s shown in the first two rounds. Comesana has also played very well, but I’m a bit afraid he’ll be too harmless on return and that he’ll get punished at the end of sets where Berrettini is often very good. I kind of feel like this match depends entirely on Berrettini.
