Recovery!!
Both of them won a legendary match in a decisive super tie-break in the previous round, and this match should normally go to the one who has recovered the best.
Five hours and sixteen minutes of battle for Matteo Berrettini, who got the better of Comesana thanks to his experience by managing his lows better and being even stronger in his highs. The Italian has two big weapons to handle these long matches. The first is his experience, and the second is his huge serve, which gets him out of a ton of tricky situations.
He had a dip during the second set, and I thought it was going to be very tough for him to come back, but even when he was down two sets to one, he still managed to put in the effort to fight back. He's a guy who has always been strong physically and mentally. He's built for this kind of match, and on top of that, he's gaining confidence. Let's not forget that Berrettini has already played in a Grand Slam final and that he knows how to handle these events as well as the recovery.
Speaking of recovery, we also have to mention the legendary match won by J. M. Cerundolo after 6 hours and 3 minutes of battle, one of the longest matches at Roland Garros. The Argentinian didn’t look that tired during the match, but once it was over, he said he was very tired, especially mentally, and that he had given everything.
He also said that he now has to manage his recovery, get some sleep and see if he can start his next match without being on one leg. I found him very clear-headed in the way he talked about Berrettini, saying he’s an extremely experienced player and much better prepared for these back-to-back matches. It’s true that the Italian has already been through a lot of similar situations and knows himself better than Cerundolo does, which is something new for the Argentinian.
In terms of the match-up, we have a Berrettini who’s going to try to control the match and do damage with his serve–forehand combo, while Cerundolo will try to stand far back and make him play as much as possible without suffering too much, as he showed against Landaluce.
