"This is the chance of a lifetime."
Flavio Cobolli fully appreciates the opportunity he's experiencing. Will he play his best tennis today?
For now, the Italian is living a dream couple of weeks, and he’s fully embracing his role as a very dangerous outsider. All but guaranteed a top‑10 spot at the end of the tournament, happy spectator of the Champions League, daily dinners with his friends. When everything off the court is going this well, this player with huge potential hits a seriously high level.
Too high for Matteo Arnaldi? Probably. The Italian reaches the semis with merit, sure, but also with a bit of luck. Physical issues for Griekspoor, Tsitsipas, Berrettini. He was two points away from the exit against a Tiafoe who must still be kicking himself...
In conditions where both players are playing their best tennis, Cobolli, on red clay, is the better player. Period. He proved it by winning 3–1 right here last year, and I don’t really see how Arnaldi could stop him today. Without doing a very deep match-up analysis, I just find that Flavio is simply more solid in open play.
Small point in Matteo’s favor: the slightly cold weather today will allow him to defend better. But still... For me the choice is made, I just hope Cobo’s ML isn’t too low...
