Not Bejlek's surface

Dayana Yastremska did not arrive in Hertogenbosch empty-handed. The Lyon-based Ukrainian had a strong month of May: a title at the WTA 125 in Parma, a three-set final against Krejčíková after an epic semifinal versus Bouzas Maneiro saved over two days in three tiebreaks, before falling in the 1st round of Roland Garros to Paolini in a lopsided scoreline. She therefore comes into the Rosmalen grass with rhythm, confidence, and a naturally flat-hitting profile well suited to a fast surface. Her round of 16 at Wimbledon 2019 remains her best reference on grass, but her offensive game and aggressive serve make her a more dangerous player on this surface than her No. 45 ranking suggests.

On the other side of the net, Sára Bejlek has also had a remarkable start to the season. A WTA title in Abu Dhabi in February after coming through qualifying, a jump from No. 101 to No. 38 in the world, then a second round at Roland Garros where she lost to Świątek after having dominated Stephens. The 20-year-old Czech is a genuine talent, built on clay where she has a 71% career win rate. Grass tells a different story: 1 win and 4 losses in her career on the surface, and three attempts in Wimbledon qualifying all ending in the first round. Her patient baseline game and long rallies do not naturally translate to this low bounce.
