It's off to a great start!
Both of them came away from a Roland Garros tournament that left them wanting more, and here they are on a surface they really like!
Let’s start with GMP. The Frenchman had to throw in the towel against Djokovic at Roland because of a wrist pain if I remember correctly. If it hadn’t improved, he wouldn’t take the risk of coming back now and would push back his return to secure Wimbledon.
His odds at almost 3 on the sharp books are tempting, because on grass, especially when it’s still pretty fresh, the ball really skids through! His matches are often 50/50. And I think you’ll have to count on him in terms of motivation. With all these upheavals (coach, injuries, etc.), he’ll want to “get his season going.” Small downside for me: apart from his serve, volley, and slice, he’s got a very topspinny forehand, doesn’t move super well, and is very tall. So from the baseline, for me he’s really not the most suited guy to grass.
That’s where Tommy Paul’s profile obviously comes into play. If he manages to make GMP play and keep him at the back of the court, it’s in the bag.
Now, no player is a robot. Paul has played 5 of his 6 early-season grass matches in 3 sets, including 3 losses. Sure, not against mugs, but GMP is anything but a mug.
