My Taylor is... back ?
Excellent grass-court player but still not back to his best level after his injury, what should we make of it?
So, Fritz losing in the first round at Roland, whether he’s in form or not, I kind of want to say who cares. I’d even be inclined to say the opposite: it’s actually a pretty good sign. Why? It gives him time to strengthen his knee (he stopped for almost two months for that, with rehab at home that really recharged him), he’s probably been able to train well on grass in my opinion, and lastly, he didn’t play that badly at Roland, so confidence-wise I’m fine with it.
And now he’s playing one of the new trendy Spaniards, namely Landaluce. The Spaniard (again) came back from a set down to beat P2H, who helped him quite a bit to get his first win on grass this season. In other words: Landaluce is up and running in the tournament, but he hasn’t shown particularly sharp tennis on this surface. He’s clearly still learning, and his mistakes are likely to cost him a lot here.
Because in terms of the match-up, the American’s solidity from the baseline is, for me, what’s going to make the difference here. I also felt the Spaniard isn’t really dialed in yet when it comes to his serve. In short, I won’t be tempting fate by backing him today, even though I love the guy...
