The Czech amazes!

Nikola Bartůňková has no longer been an anonymous wildcard since Monday. The Czech player knocked out 9th seed Shnaider in the first round and now faces Mertens with a statistic that deserves attention: she hasn’t lost a best-of-two-sets match on grass in 2026. The numbers behind this streak are telling. She wins 64.7% of pressure points on her serve compared to 56.3% for the Belgian, she dominates the key scores at 30-30 and 40-40, and her overall match efficiency is almost double that of Mertens in 2026. At 20, she is progressing at a pace that the rankings don’t yet reflect, and on grass she has built a solid serving structure that allows her to hold firm in decisive moments.

Elise Mertens, for her part, comes into this in a far less convincing spell. The Belgian was knocked out in the first round in ’s-Hertogenbosch last week by Ruse, and her opening match in Berlin was anything but smooth. On grass in 2026 she regularly drops sets, her break-point conversion rate remains lower than Bartůňková’s, and her handling of key points on serve is clearly less solid. The only H2H between the two dates back to the Australian Open in January on hard court, 6-0, 6-4 for Mertens against a much less seasoned Bartůňková. That result has no predictive value on grass in June.
