The champion of Berlin!

There’s something a bit unfair about this draw for Elena-Gabriela Ruse. The 28-year-old right-handed Romanian, ranked No. 67 in the world and coached by Andrei Cociasu, arrives in Bad Homburg with a solid 2026 grass-court record and real legitimacy on the surface: 4–4 this season, finalist in ’s-Hertogenbosch in 2025, 9–11 in her career on grass. She takes the ball early, creates plenty of chances (0.73 break points created per game, the best of the two), and her 36% first-serve return rate is better than Noskova’s. She’s in decent form over her last ten matches (5–5), with no reported injuries. On paper, she’s a serious opponent. But that paper runs up this Monday against a Noskova coming off the best grass-court week of her career.

Linda Noskova is a right-hander, 21 years old, ranked No. 10 in the world since Sunday, and coached by Tomas Krupa. She has just won Berlin without losing a set, her first grass-court title and her first entry into the top 10. Her grass numbers over the last 52 weeks are on another level: 11–2, 76.5% of points won behind her first serve, 82.5% of service games held, 67.5% of break points saved, breakpoint prevail ratio at 1.920 compared to 1.100 for Ruse. The match efficiency ratio says it all: 4.812 for Noskova, 1.765 for Ruse. She is a perfect 100% against players outside the top 100 in the last 52 weeks, and Ruse falls into that category.
