Big match!
Bonzi beating Daniil here last year... and then losing to Thompson after...
Bon, Thompson is not at all a grass-court pusher, but he wasn’t in his best form from what I remember.
So here we’ve got a Frenchman who’s able to play aggressive, steel-like tennis on grass. His coach, Nicolas Mahut, one of the gods of grass, often tells him, “you’re a tiger!” Mahut is a grass-court bible and will really help his protégé. He’s going to make Diallo play as much as possible, hit a lot to his backhand, and drag him into the “short game.” The goal: make him fall apart. Because Diallo is gaining momentum. His last tournament was encouraging. He’s still missing quite a lot, but at least he’s doing the right things in my opinion, trying to hurt his opponents quicker. He’s got a killer serve and forehand! On the other hand, his volley, his touch game, the key moments… Damn Gabi, that’s something you’ve got to work on, for fuck’s sake!
Last year, Diallo took Fritz to a fifth set. I feel like it’s often like that with him. Can we trust him this time?
