A Weaker Version?
Is 2026 Khachanov starting to become more beatable?
It's starting to feel that way. Khachanov still tends to get through the opening rounds, but for a player who used to be so good at beating players he is "supposed to beat", we are seeing him taking losses against these kinds of players more and more. His big serving, solid baseline game, and physical strength are still present and make him a gatekeeper for a lot of players. He lost the first round in Halle against Quinn and has then only played an exhibition against Damm, losing in straight sets. Before that, we had the absolute beating he took in a five-setter in RG by a very good De Jong. Khachanov is someone who can play decently enough without needing to build up a lot of form, but I feel like his overall level has dropped for quite a while now. Tactically, you need to avoid getting dragged into long rhythmic baseline rallies against Khachanov, either by being able to go to the line or coming forward to the net (dragging Khachanov into the forecourt is also great). Harris is someone with a decent serve and solid game, but I keep saying that his game feels rather average - it doesn't feel like he really excels at anything. These kinds of players normally get suffocated by Karen! I did notice that Harris was quite successful in his net approaches during qualifying.
Harris has the advantage of having played a good number of grass matches already and coming through qualifying. I'm not so sure I consider him a dangerous qualifier, though, mainly based on his playstyle and level. However, I imagine Khachanov is a big favorite here, and after seeing him get manhandled recently by (a very good) De Jong in Roland Garros, perhaps Harris could keep this match at least somewhat interesting?
