Too complex a sequence?
As I write these lines, Quinn is about to play her final in Mallorca before flying off to Wimbledon without being able to rest much.
I’m deliberately doing this analysis before the final, because no matter the result (except in some unlikely scenario or an injury) I already have a bit of an idea of what I’m going to do in the next match. First of all, the question of back-to-back matches is, for me, a good problem to have. We like it when players play a lot and are in rhythm. Quinn’s matches haven’t been very physical, far from it, especially since we’re on grass as well.
I remember clearly his run right after his Challenger title in Phoenix, where he managed to build on it properly and beat Hurkacz, then Ruud in the following tournament. He’s the kind of player who, once confident, is just monstrous. So, as far as I’m concerned, I don’t think playing back-to-back is really an issue in this match-up. I expect him to be at an excellent level, and even if the conditions are less favorable for him here than in Mallorca, he’s still a player who can rely on his serve quality and his aggressiveness.
I’m a bit less convinced by Darderi L., who’s coming back after a minor tonsil surgery. Nothing serious, but the Italian will probably lack a bit of fitness over the next few weeks.
We saw him very clutch and clinical in Mallorca against Hanfmann before logically losing to Borges. The Italian was treated for a thigh issue, but to me it looked more like the start of cramp than anything else. Especially since he already played yesterday in an exhibition match again to get ready for Wimbledon. It really feels like a guy who needs matches and isn’t injured at all. I’m still a bit skeptical about his level on grass. Yet, as you know, I love him, but I still think he loses quality in several areas. In particular, his forehand, which is very heavy with a lot of spin, is harder to execute effectively on this kind of surface. He’s also not very good in his movement.
