The Spaniard was completely dominated and had no answers against Ugo Carabelli. Then the Argentinian fell and hurt his ankle. He later retired. It’s a win that came out of nowhere for Merida, who considers himself lucky to be in the second round. He even said on his social media that he didn’t feel comfortable on this surface, but that he was happy to make it to the second round. We’re not talking about a good grass-court player who lost and can now build up steam and become dangerous against a completely different style of play; we’re talking about a young, inexperienced player in this format and on this surface, who’s now going to face a top player.

The top player in question is Medvedev, and even if the Russian can lose to absolutely anyone, he’s still someone very experienced who knows this surface inside out. His first round was of good quality against Cilic. That wasn’t a gift either, but Daniil played well. He again had his little problem finishing things off in the 3rd set, where he could have wrapped it up more easily. But apart from that, I really liked his match. If he keeps playing like this, he can go far in this tournament, which looks quite open.

I was already quite skeptical about Merida against Ugo Carabelli, but now I’m even more so against Medvedev. I really don’t believe in the upset.
