A Lucky Draw?
Burruchaga, Mannarino and now Svajda...
That's not a bad draw for three rounds at Wimbledon, is it? The Australians' scorelines look impressive and dominant; however, I don't think he is at his best yet. There is quite some tension and also struggles on his own serve. It's been like that for ADM for a while this year, at least since the clay season started. He still beats most players he is supposed to beat, but in matches against top players, he is quite underwhelming because they are able to "expose" him. After his loss, Mannarino expressed how hard the matchup against De Minaur is for him, stating that he plays a somewhat similar style but does everything just a little bit better. That's the issue for most players who lack power and run into ADM - he becomes an impenetrable wall and can outlast them with superior movement, rally tolerance, and endurance. We have still seen two unlikely losses for ADM in the last two tournaments, against Majchrzak in Hertogenbosch and Nakashima in Queen's, so I would once again say that he is slightly vulnerable at the moment!
Enough for Svajda to get upset here? I'm not so sure. The American has been dealing with tough things in his private life and also came into Wimbledon without ideal grass preparation. He tends to have a good attitude on court, simply going about his business without much emotion. His opening round against lucky loser Llamas Ruiz was clean, but against a rather easy opponent. He followed it up with a nice win against Majchrzak, who is very much in-form! He was a deserved winner, the more stable player overall, and his level frustrated Majchrzak, who let his emotions get the better of him at times, leading to some poor decisions. While he is rather "lightweight", he can still put some power on his forehand, his first serve is decent, and his tennis IQ is quite good. Something that needs to be highlighted is that he did have a medical timeout against Majchrzak for a foot issue. It didn't seem to be an issue for the rest of the match, but if it were to flare up, it would be extra tough against an opponent like ADM...
