The equation is pretty simple to solve here.
Fédérico Gomez logically got through this first round after coming through qualifying, and he’s picked up a few points to climb back up the rankings to somewhere a bit more appropriate. Now, we’re still on slow clay, and even against a fairly low-ranked player yesterday, we could see Fédérico’s limitations. That’s why I mentioned in the title that the equation is simple to solve here, because if the Italian finds a bit of his tennis again, he wins logically and easily, maybe with a break difference in each set. At Wimbledon, the Italian struggled to recover his defensive abilities and to slide properly on the grass. He’s going to get that key characteristic and skill back for his clay-court game, and counter the Argentine’s heavy hitting. So there’s not much suspense here, and I’ll end my analysis.
