The De Jong Enigma

As a proper Dutchman, I find Jesper De Jong hard to figure out. I don’t always understand his inconsistency. Either that, or I think we overrated him after his run at Roland Garros, when he’d already been a bit lucky just to make it through qualifying. Or maybe I just haven’t properly understood the match‑ups that bother him. So I’m wary of him (and of myself). As for his game, slow clay or not, I feel like anything can suit him. Except maybe the wind, with his closed forehand grip.

On the other side, Choinski is putting together good matches, and now he’s the outsider. You know it, he’s a player who can adapt to any surface because, despite his nationality and the quality of his serve, he’s got good grinder DNA. The confidence he’s playing with right now should be enough to treat him as a serious contender for the win. I even think his style could bother Jesper. But I’d like your opinion on that. I have matches in mind where I felt Jesper was clearly troubled by his opponents’ power...
