We are treated to an all-Italian battle straight away!

Well, first of all... welcome back, Musetti! His 2025 was crazy; he pushed himself really hard to get into Turin, and 2026 has been the opposite, filled with injuries. We did get to see him play the big clay events leading up to RG, and the pattern was quite similar... play a few good early rounds before fading away against physical and powerful opponents (Fils, Lehecka, and Ruud). During his time away from court, he seems to have been participating in quite a few advertisements and shows. Lorenzo also says he has "accepted" the injury, so at least we can assume he seems to be in a good mental space. However, in the end, the main question is how he will turn up on the court, isn't it? From what I remember from his last matches back from injuries, he does not really struggle to find and play his own game at a good level. However, the biggest problem is intense and attacking opponents that can really push him. This is a problem even without injuries, but coming back without any rhythm and proper match fitness makes it a lot worse. So, does Arnaldi fit this bill? For me, both yes and no. He is a player who is very capable of hanging on in high-paced, intense rallies. However, as you might have heard in other previews from us... Arnaldi tends to perform a lot better in a counter-punching role! When he needs to think too much (instead of just reacting) and take initiative offensively, it can go haywire quickly. His match in Umag against Dzumhur was a very good example of that... hitting amazing winners and then crazy unforced errors, hot and cold.

I remember watching them battle in Båstad in 2023. Arnaldi was having kind of his breakthrough year on tour and had a great level. Musetti was coming in a bit "cold", took a while to settle, and managed to win in a deciding-set tiebreaker in the end. We tend to like Musetti against these kinds of opponents; he is less erratic and can play his game without getting constantly overpowered. Now, two things go against him here... first match back from injury and playing on a semi-fast hardcourt in Washington. Arnaldi has a great record on American hardcourts and has built some confidence, now being able to call himself a Grand Slam Semifinalist (his grass results and Umag don't really matter that much). How will Musetti hold up physically if the match drags on? Will he play into Arnaldi's hands if he takes a more offensive approach? Many questions; let's see if there are any answers in the odds...
