The classic!
This is already the fourth meeting between Tiafoe and Atmane this season. It’s brutal for Terrence, who just can’t manage to win. And I think even Tiafoe is bothered by having to play against a friend who gives him a hard time every single match.
In the last three meetings, we’ve had an almost identical scenario each time: an inspired Atmane, able to compete, even taking a set, but who always ends up losing in the end. Every time, he manages to create a huge number of chances, but it just doesn’t quite work out.
Tiafoe has a great track record in this tournament. He hasn’t done worse than the quarterfinals since 2022 and loves playing at home. He’s also having a good year. You can feel all the effort he’s put in this season, and it’s paying off. We’ve got an in-form American who’s playing well and performing well in this tournament and in these conditions. He’s a potential outsider for the title, but he still has to get his tournament going against an opponent he never beats easily. It’s really not straightforward at all.
Atmane is less dazzling at the moment. He kind of went through the grass season without being able to do much. I really saw some good things in quite a few of his matches, but he didn’t have much luck with the draws and, above all, he ended up losing every time, even when putting in a strong performance. Now he’s back on American hard courts, which could suit him. I honestly think that with the speed of the courts and the way the ball bounces up nicely, he’ll be able to do damage with his serve and also with his forehand spin. He obviously knows the match-up inside out, and that’s what he has to rely on to cause Tiafoe problems. I also have to mention that he’s just split on bad terms with his recent coach. And we know he’s an emotional guy. Maybe that’s going to hit him a bit. In any case, we haven’t seen him back on court since that change. We’ll see how he behaves, but in theory, if Atmane is really focused and serious, he definitely has something to play for once again. Tiafoe doesn’t like big servers, and likes Atmane’s style even less. I’m expecting a fairly tight match, with potentially the Frenchman taking a set, but once again probably losing in the end. However, that leaves the door open to several betting options.
