Nakashima's Opportunity?
Brandon has lost both meetings against Mensik in Australia...
Well, let's provide a bit of context for those matches... it was at the beginning of 2024, and both players were actually playing a lot of challengers then (Nakashima was bouncing back up the rankings, and Mensik had not fully broken through yet). Mensik was a heavy underdog in both matches, around 3.50~ in Canberra and then around 3.15 just a few days later at the Australian Open. Still, he managed to win both matches in three sets, including some tight sets. Both players are Big Servers / Solid Baseliners, and in those kinds of mirror matchups, mental strength and clutchness weigh in quite heavily, since it tends to go deeper into sets and into tiebreaks, where the margins are quite small. Already in their matches in 2024, Mensik won three out of four sets in this way... 7-5, 7-5, 7-6. Well, a lot has happened since 2024... and I think we can all agree that it is Mensik who has progressed the most between the two, right? He is the one who had that insane run to the title in Miami, and he is the one who can turn up and get wins in the big matches!
So, what case can we make for Nakashima here? Well, we should at least take their first round into account. Nakashima easily swept aside Etcheverry, while Mensik's performance was quite a bit more questionable against the younger Svajda brother. Playing in the middle/later half of the year and in tougher conditions in the US are surely better for Nakashima than it is for Mensik. Today is projected to be quite warm, even if this match is scheduled early, so at least a bit cooler before it peaks later on. Quite frankly, we can sum this up in the following way... the matchup should favour Mensik quite heavily, but the conditions and his physicality are question marks for him. Lastly, let's also keep in mind that we have seen that Mensik is someone who is quite good at playing bad first rounds before raising his level as the tournament progresses...
