Almost a lucky loser

Cerundolo is entitled to a second chance in this tournament, or almost.

Cerundolo was disastrous yesterday in the first part of his match against Boyer, despite having two set points in the first set that he wasted before collapsing. I honestly think that if Boyer hadn’t had his little stomach issues, he was on track to win it. The Argentine kind of got out of that first round by a miracle and could either come in more relaxed and find a second wind, or just play another bad match, which seems to be the current trend for him.

As for Gea, the Frenchman seems to have had some really weird matches in his first two rounds. I didn’t see them, but looking at the stats and the comments, they seemed to be very poor matches from him, but also from his opponents. It’s good to manage to win even when you’re playing badly, and those wins are more meaningful than Cerundolo’s, for example. The Frenchman believes in himself and he recently changed coach, with a bit of a point to prove regarding that change. This week seems like a good opportunity for him. He has nothing to lose and Cerundolo is not scary at all.

I still have a bit of trouble figuring out Gea’s potential level and what he can really do on a tennis court. On the one hand, I think Cerundolo might like the match-up and manage to return well enough, but I really don’t like the Argentine’s form or what he showed in the first round. I’m going to need a really good price to back his side.
