First of the name!
A pretty enjoyable match to analyze, because I think if we do it in enough detail, the analysis can reveal real value. I think the match-up can be favorable to either player, depending on their form. The Australian seems to be in slightly better shape, because I haven’t been convinced by the American, whom I expected to be better in Los Cabos after some convincing matches at Wimbledon. But he was missing what you might call confidence. I think he’s struggling to get back to his best level. At times he seems a bit hesitant. Yet at his best, he could exploit the Australian’s weakness, the long rallies, with a more deconstructed kind of game. That won’t be the case here. He’s going to stick to a basic game plan, the one he knows best, being a bit less creative. For me, it’s the Australian’s solidity that will be slightly better. We shouldn’t forget that the Australian is always hard to beat and that he’s much more resistant in rallies than people think. And of course, he should normally get a few more free points on serve than his opponent today. For all these reasons, and because the Australian is a slight underdog, I think it’s worth having a flutter on him.
