Form vs Matchup?
Which one of the above will prove most important?
Well, it's safe to say that Fearnley is definitely on a tear right now! He is playing with a ton of confidence, really making sure to utilize his strengths (net play and attacking tennis). He has a lot of wins lately on grass and hardcourts, but we also need to keep in mind that many of those have been against Challenger-level players. It has looked a bit tougher when he has stepped up against ATP-level opposition. Ofner and Mannarino are good wins, especially in straight-sets, but perhaps not the toughest test just yet. Fortunately, he gets to play Mensik, who is not at his best right now. However, the Czech still has a decent base level to work with, due to his serve and ability to stay solid in more of a counter-punching role. We are used to Mensik being very clutch in tiebreaks, but he is more vulnerable in this aspect now as well (similar to Shelton). Against Nakashima, in Washington, I found him to be the better player overall; he just made some really poor decisions in the key moments (the last two points that made him lose the match were really poor).
Fearnley's attacking game should quite suit Mensik! Normally, the Czech deals with net rushing quite well; he is good at passing shots, and he can hit those open-stance backhand passes beautifully ;) We know that his weaknesses are when he has to dictate play and also getting rushed on his forehand, especially by flat balls on a low bounce (he really prefers a higher bounce for his forehand).
