Can Norrie shock the world?

Or will this simply be more of a formality for Zverev?

Well, let's start with Zverev. 2026 has been his season... finally getting that Grand Slam at Roland Garros (yes, it was an easy draw). Even a good run at Wimbledon, putting up a decent fight in the final against Sinner. By now, we all know about "this added confidence from having a Grand Slam will boost him, that's what he was missing", so I'll skip that ;) Opening-round loss against a familiar foe, Griekspoor, in Montreal. Nothing that concerns me a lot, considering it was a big change in conditions for him; he came out a bit cold against an opponent that has good weapons to trouble him. Of course, as per usual, he found a lot of reasons for his loss 😂 As I said, I think he lacked a bit of motivation, and that we will see him more ready here in Cincinnati, in conditions that suit him well!

If you, like me, had to watch Norrie's first round against Prizmic yesterday, you know that it was one hell of a scrappy match. Both players looked absolutely physically done after just about 10 minutes; we kept seeing awful errors on easy balls over and over, from both sides. I wrote in my post-match review that I think Norrie would have lost to a lot of players yesterday, but he was at least somewhat clutch and drew a player who had no fitness at all. We have all (me, Marcos, and Elie) been projecting a decent hardcourt summer for Norrie, and while he has lived up to it in some regard, in terms of results, I think we can also say that his matches have not been great, especially against better opponents. I don't think I need to go through this specific matchup a lot; it's not a good one for Norrie. Zverev is obviously world-class against left-handers, and Norrie's game is just too weak to really punish Zverev. Not going to be easy to outlast him in the heat either, especially considering how Norrie was looking against Prizmic! If there's anything positive to point out for Norrie, it would simply be that perhaps his flat backhand could cause some issues for Zverev on these courts if he can really be offensive enough with it, which is a major question mark. Apart from that, maybe he can put up just enough of a decent fight against the German, who might still need a bit of time to fire up...
