Will the Australian disappoint again?
That was certainly the case in his last main draw round in Montreal...
In Canada, he played a great qualifying match against Faria (who, admittedly, might not have been a 100%). He was then a rather decently sized favorite against Duckworth, in a match where he completely blew it. Fair, I will give credit to his rival Aussie as well; he completely neutralized him and bullied his backhand. Also, the conditions were not good; it was really windy, and there were interruptions due to rain as well. We know that he can be somewhat dangerous in these fast conditions, with a decent serve and forehand. One thing that really stands out to me when I watch O'Connell play is that his movement is really not good at all, which makes him really struggle when he is not the one who can dictate play (or neutralize aggressors properly with his slice). Duckworth was able to constantly rush his backhand, which led to short balls that he was able to put away easily. We know that Majchrzak has a great backhand and tends to be quite tactically smart, which worries me a bit for O'Connell! However, there are still some questions about his form for me. He's had a pretty good year so far, but it was a worrying loss against Monfils in Montreal! Also, I don't want to only focus on the negatives for O'Connell; at least he has the ability to finish points at the net as well, which I find to be quite a good asset against the Pole. Majchrzak can struggle when he is getting rushed by Attacking Baseliners who can constantly keep pressure on him, especially if they have a big serve as well. While O'Connell can play some good attacking tennis, I'm worried about his ability to sustain the pressure, as well as his backhand getting rushed!
