A little vitamin treatment for Medjedovic.
The Serb has a big physical issue. He always seems burnt out or to have some problem. He’s not seriously going to get outmuscled by Trungelliti, is he??
After catching a virus at Wimbledon, Medjedovic was eagerly awaited in Montreal and he didn’t disappoint, taking an MTO after just a few games where they checked his vital signs. Maybe he still had some leftovers from that virus, but it’s starting to date now, with more than a month of potential rest. Or maybe it was just the conditions, because once again, he’s a player who’s likely to overheat or physically blow up in hot or humid conditions. When I look at the first day in Cincinnati and the number of players who were completely overheating, I think if there’s one match to watch tomorrow, it might be this one. I don’t have much to say about his tennis since it’s been a while since we’ve really seen him on court string together several matches. We know what he’s capable of when he’s in shape, but that doesn’t seem to be the case right now. I’m waiting to be convinced otherwise, but yes, on paper, the fast conditions in Cincinnati could suit him.
On the other side, we have the surprising Trungelliti, who once again comes through qualifying and is going to go for it with nothing to lose. The Argentinian is having the season of his life and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. He’s just taken out Ofner and then Nishikori back to back, which is quite a scalp list in qualifying. In Montreal, he only lost to Mejia, who is really in form. And overall, even if he’s not winning a ton of matches right now, every time he plays, he puts in great performances and plays very good tennis. With his counterpunching qualities and a tennis IQ that’s relatively high, he could manage to counter Medjedovic well and make him crack.
They already played each other in Barcelona and the Serb won 2 sets to 0 without being overwhelmingly dominant. The momentum has changed a lot since then; I’d almost say we have more confidence in Trungelliti today than in Medjedovic. That said, it’s only a matter of time before Medjedovic rebuilds a minimum of physical condition and gets his head straight again. Once that happens, he’ll be well above this kind of opponent and even more so on a fast hard court. The match is definitely on his racket, but right now, he doesn’t inspire confidence.
