Can you feel the pressure?
Yes, this is a big week for Terence...
Well, it's no secret why, is it? He is defending a huge chunk of points here, a semifinal from last year. This was pretty much the tournament that put him "on the map" for a lot of people. It's hard to replicate a performance in the following years that lives up to expectations that have been set very high; we see a lot of players folding like laundry. However, could Atmane be an exception to this? First of all, I really like his hardcourt swing in the US so far! Yes, he's been eliminated in the second round in Washington and the third round in Montreal, but look at the opponents he has faced... five matches, all against top opponents! I didn't even find him that bad in his straight-sets loss to Mensik; it's just a very bad matchup for him (Mensik also played it really well). More than this, he was also blessed by a walking BYE in Fucsovics here in his first round, who had enough after a few games and a rain break.
So, I talked a bit about a troublesome matchup; can we put Etcheverry in the same category for Atmane? The Argentinian has already beaten him twice in 2026, in Monte Carlo and Hamburg. Well, those are definitely conditions that heavily favour the clay-courter, isn't it? ;) Atmane's game really depends on the conditions, even if he has the heavy weaponry to sometimes blast through the clay as well. Still, it's not an easy matchup on paper. Etcheverry serves decently and stays solid, something that can trouble Atmane, coaxing errors out of him. Something that gives me a bit of comfort for Atmane is that he played a really good match recently in Montreal against Khachanov, who is also that kind of player. Etcheverry is not allergic to hardcourt, but he is definitely not as effective there, especially not when we are talking about fast conditions and first-strike tennis. Besides that, he has looked absolutely lethargic on court in his last matches... he will really need to get back to his level quickly, because Atmane is bringing a lot of fire and intensity!
