De Minaur isn’t right, guys. He almost pulled another huge choke against Fery. But above all, in terms of level of play, it’s still not there yet. First, he’s no longer that massive, impenetrable wall in the sense that he’s making more errors in defense. And then his transitions/attacks aren’t super clean. He’s still searching, basically. If you add to that his eternal lack of power, you end up with Fils as the favorite by design.

The Frenchman is doing better, though. For me, he’s on a mission to get revenge for Jodar lol. More broadly, to stop losing matches like that and finally get past the quarterfinal barrier in Masters 1000s. That’s how he came in “demolition man” mode against Lehecka and delivered a 9.4 out of 10 performance in the first set. He dropped his level after that and was too imprecise in the second-set tie-break. But overall, much better. A hungry Fils is a good Fils.

At 1.58, do you have to click? When Fils reaches his top level, no matter the match-up, he’ll be on top. Beyond that, it’s a bit better for ADM than it was against Fery in the sense that the Australian will probably have less playmaking to do. And in his current state, it’s more comfortable for him to play on the counter. But still, how can you trust the Australian more than Fils on the big points?
