Don't Underestimate Lloyd?
Despite his ranking, the South African is a dangerous and experienced opponent...
It's been a tough couple of years for Lloyd Harris due to recurring injuries. Before that, he was someone playing regularly on the main ATP tour. He has been grinding Challengers for a while now, but even during this phase, we have seen him turn up as a dangerous low-ranked player in the Grand Slams. He has a playstyle that is hard for many to deal with (Big Server / Solid Baseliner), and combined with his experience in big matches, he becomes quite a threat, even for the higher-ranked players! Lloyd has been playing a crazy amount of tennis lately; he won a Challenger tournament and then made the semifinal in the next one... before qualifying for the US Open. It's been around 15 matches in 21 days! We have also seen quite a decent number of MTOs, but he keeps being hard to beat, even after those. At least he had a really quick round against Kennedy in his first round.
As for Tsitsipas, he must be feeling great to finally get a win against Fils, who has dominated him in the H2H. It looked like it was heading in that direction again, with the Frenchman up a set and a break. However, Tsitsipas was able to grab the second set, and all of Arthur's momentum and energy were completely gone for the rest of the match! Yes, Fils' level really dropped, but Tsitsipas played amazingly as well; let's give him credit. It seems like Tsitsipas' backhand is in much better shape now, which also helps his return. For years, it has been pinpointed as a weakness that made him really vulnerable against a lot of players, but when this is no longer the case (at least as much), it really makes him stronger... because his serve, forehand, and net play are all superb. I think this is a decent matchup for Stefanos; he gets an opponent that is not overly aggressive, which allows him to dictate more. Harris has a great serve, so he needs to keep up his improved level of returning. I want to put a bit of a question mark on Tsitsipas's ability to string great matches together... I saw him play very well against Royer in Cincinnati, but his follow-up match against Auger-Aliassime was one to forget...
