Short and Simple?
Can Medvedev keep building...?
It was a good showing against Gaston in his first-round match, maybe some glimpses of the old Medvedev we've seen before on Arthur Ashe Stadium. However, I think it is also important to point out that the exceptionally good matchup against Gaston helped a bit in that regard. Anyway, we'll take it, because Medvedev has failed to look good even in favorable matchups (like against Trungelliti in Cincinnati). Still, there is some belief that we get a really good Medvedev back at some point, because of just how good he was during the Sunshine Double (Indian Wells & Miami) earlier this year; it's not that long ago! Also, at the start of the year in Brisbane. It can also be seen in the odds; he keeps being a pretty huge favorite in many matches, like there are expectations that it is going to "click" for him.
As for Gorzny, I'll admit straight away that my knowledge is a bit limited. Marcos has watched a few matches and tells me he saw a player who can switch on and play great for a set, but, like many other lower-rated players, struggles with consistency beyond that. He was able to get a huge upset win against Collignon in the first round. Sure, the Belgian is really out of form, but it's still a strong win, especially since his momentum got halted by a rain delay and having to restart the next day, something that usually is not a good thing for the underdog with current momentum. Besides that, apparently he survived a brain infection in 2019, against the odds - which, according to himself, gave him a new outlook on life, not taking anything for granted and making the best of every moment. He also grew up with Michelsen and Tien, which is pretty cool! Hey, maybe Learner can give him some good advice on how to handle Medvedev ;)
