Strong at Home?
Can Shang finally get going a bit?
Well, there's no hiding it. The last two seasons have been really tough for Shang, with the injuries. He is able to win a few matches, but can't really consistently string together any deep runs. At least he played all four tournaments during the American hardcourt swing; that's good! His first-round loss to Trungelliti kind of perfectly paints the picture... he is absolutely dominant for parts of the match, but falters in some key moments and then fades away physically. We know he can play at a high-level, but the consistency is not there right now... and not the physicality either. Well, now he gets to play in Chengdu, where he won his first ATP tournament back in 2024 (before the injury troubles began). We like the fast conditions here for him, and he is also someone who can raise his level with a crowd that backs him.
Mannarino has also had a tough season. He still has the ability to play really good matches, but there's just a lot of not-so-good matches in between. We also saw that Father Time is starting to catch up to him a bit; he was completely unable to recover after his five-setter against Tirante at the US Open. I would say that grass and indoor hardcourts are extra important for him right now! Adrian decided to play two matches at the Rennes Challenger before coming here, but he has adjusted well in the past despite this.
Mannarino has excellent stats against other left-handers, which makes sense! He has a very unique game, and I think it really throws off other left-handers, especially... they are the ones who are used to having the advantage against right-handers ;) However, I fear that this could look a bit like his match against Shapovalov recently... where he got a bit overpowered by a younger guy with more power. I'll admit, Shapovalov has some better tools against Mannarino... more power, a stronger serve, and most importantly, the ability to finish points at the net. Shang has already faced Mannarino once, a loss to him in Miami 2023. Despite losing, he played a very strong first set, and I always like players who have faced Mannarino before, so they know a bit of what to expect...
