A Comfortable Matchup?
This looks like a pretty nice draw for Tsitsipas...
It's really nice to see Tsitsipas turning things around. More than anything, he is willing to dig deep and fight in his matches; we saw some really good comeback wins for him at the US Open. He's been pretty busy since then, playing Davis Cup and now coming through qualifying here in Tokyo. His serve and forehand were firing in the fast, slick Tokyo conditions... sometimes he is a bit underrated in these conditions! Etcheverry was gaining a bit of momentum early on in the US Open, but as soon as he faced a good opponent (Michelsen), he didn't really stand much of a chance. It was the same last week in Hangzhou, when he faced an inspired Jacquet. So what do we make of his form currently? I'm going to say that it's OK, but nothing more. That means that I like him in some matches where he is the stronger player and expected to win, but I don't have a lot of belief that he is going to pull off big upsets with this form during the Asian hardcourt swing.
Besides that, I don't really like this matchup for him. Tsitsipas can dictate with his forehand; he has a better serve, and he can also come and finish points at the net. There's not really a lot of advantage for Etcheverry, unless he really serves lights out and Stefanos's backhand is having one of its bad days...
